The entrance is easy to miss. Frank Darling occupies the second floor of a commercial building at 1305 Wisconsin Avenue NW, up a staircase that deposits you into something more living room than jewelry store. Customers describe the space as homey and welcoming, which is a deliberate choice: no glass cases running the perimeter, no salespeople hovering. This is a showroom built around the consultation table, not the display case.
The company was founded in 2017 by Kegan Fisher and Jeff Smith, a husband-and-wife team who came to jewelry from an unlikely direction. Fisher studied industrial design and manufacturing at Pratt Institute and spent eleven years in the tech world, working on 3D printing and mass customization at Shapeways and SOLS. Smith shared the same maker-first sensibility. Together they identified a gap: online diamond retailers offered low prices but no experience, while traditional luxury houses offered experience at prices that felt opaque. Frank Darling was built to occupy the middle ground, combining price transparency with genuine personal design work.
The core product is a custom engagement ring, though the shop also produces wedding bands, eternity rings, and fine jewelry accessories. Customers choose from natural diamonds, lab-grown stones, moissanite, fancy-colored diamonds, and recycled options. Settings range from clean solitaires to vintage-inspired pave bands, art deco silhouettes, and more architecturally complex halo designs. Entry-level configurations in the Brasilia Collection begin around two thousand dollars, and prices scale with stone size and metal selection. The brand own phrase for its aesthetic is direct: low-profile rings for hands that do things.
The Georgetown showroom opened as part of a national expansion that now spans eight cities. Production runs out of a TriBeCa workshop launched in 2024, where in-house craftsmen handle a growing share of the manufacturing. By that year the company had designed more than ten thousand proposals and sold over sixteen thousand carats. The try-at-home program, which ships wax replicas of ring settings before any purchase is made, was built into the brand from the beginning, reflecting the founders background in mass customization and their conviction that people make better decisions when they can hold the object in their hands.
All Georgetown appointments are by reservation, and the shop books roughly a thousand consultations monthly across its showrooms. Booking online takes about two minutes, and the form asks style questions in advance so the designer assigned to your session pulls a stone selection and relevant settings before you arrive. Sessions run forty-five minutes. The team handles first-timers who know nothing about ring anatomy as comfortably as it handles buyers who arrive with a specific cut and carat weight already in mind. Walk-ins are not accommodated. Hours run seven days a week, ten to six.
