The Georgetown Garden Shop

The block of O Street NW between 32nd and the corner near Wisconsin Avenue is paved with granite cobblestones from the 1890s, and the streetcar rails are still embedded in the stone. The building at 3214 sits back slightly from the sidewalk behind a low decorative iron fence and a small planted front garden, two stories of large windows that catch the afternoon light. It is the kind of storefront that registers as different before you can say exactly why, and it briefly registered on film as well: the building appeared in Wonder Woman 1984, which used O Street for a period-set street scene.

Caroline Cobb Ervin opened The Georgetown Garden Shop in November 2023, but the idea took shape a year earlier at a cafe in Paris, where she found the sort of boutique she had been wanting to recommend to clients for years. She had spent more than two decades designing residential gardens in DC, its suburbs, and along Maryland’s Eastern Shore and the Delaware coast, training at George Washington University and building a practice centered on English and French garden aesthetics with an emphasis on native and non-invasive plants. She designed more than 250 gardens in Georgetown and the Palisades alone. That accumulation of professional knowledge is what the shop is built on: not a merchant’s eye for what moves, but a designer’s judgment about what actually works in the kinds of outdoor spaces her clients have.

The inventory reflects those two decades of site visits. Planters in a range of materials and proportions, selected with attention to how they will read against brick and stone. Outdoor furniture through Brown Jordan, available for custom order. Vases, table linens, entertaining pieces, hand tools. Ornamental accessories that hold up outdoors and look right indoors. The organizing principle, as Ervin has described it, is that each product should carry the weight of a recommendation from someone who has already solved the problem. Nothing here looks like a category error. The shop is calm and well-lit, worth moving through slowly.

Every Thursday during the growing season, from roughly March through October, a delivery of locally grown cut flowers arrives from Lynnvale Flower Farm. Ranunculus, peonies, dahlias, zinnias, lisianthus: the specific varieties shift with the season. The Thursday flower delivery has become a small weekly event on that block of O Street, the kind of thing that draws regulars back on a schedule.

The shop is closed Sundays and Mondays, open Tuesday through Saturday from eleven to five. If flowers are the draw, Thursday morning is the time to come, before the supply thins. The O Street location places it a short walk from Wisconsin Avenue but at a remove from the main commercial strip, which is part of what keeps the pace inside unhurried. Parking in upper Georgetown is easier than in the lower commercial blocks. For a first visit, the planters and the seasonal flower selection are worth the trip on their own; for a more considered project, Ervin’s background in landscape design means the shop can support custom orders for fountains, garden furniture, and specialty elements well beyond what is on the floor.
