The flagship at 1415 Wisconsin Avenue NW opened in December 2018, when Duk-ki Yu moved Major across the street from its original address into a larger space designed to feel like a walk-in closet scaled up for a serious collection. An expansive shoe wall runs the length of one side. Apparel hangs in careful order. The room is spare where it needs to be spare and dense where the product warrants it. This is not a mall shoe store. The curation here reflects twenty years of knowing exactly what belongs and what does not.

Yu’s family emigrated from Seoul in 1980, and his first pair of name-brand sneakers were Adidas Country runners. By college he was making monthly trips to San Francisco in pursuit of shoes and DJing on the side, and by his mid-twenties he had moved to Washington and enrolled in Georgetown’s business school. He spent years in music promotion, then built an advertising and marketing agency that landed accounts with car companies, soft drink brands, and Reebok. The agency work gave him a business platform, but he had always planned a store. When the partners he had recruited to help run it got cold feet, he already had a lease signed and a supply contract with Nike. He left the agency and went to work.

Major opened in 2006. On the day they revealed the store window, approximately 60 people were already in line. It was the first sneaker boutique and streetwear boutique in Washington, the first place in the city where skaters, DJs, and anyone who cared about what was on their feet could walk into a retail space that understood the culture they came from. Complex Magazine later included Major in its list of the top 50 sneaker boutiques of all time, recognition that placed it alongside stores in cities with far larger sneaker markets.

The current inventory rotates through Nike, Jordan Brand, Adidas, and New Balance releases alongside a streetwear selection that runs from established labels to smaller brands. The buying reflects Yu’s original instinct: he stocks what he considers worth stocking, not what a distribution contract requires him to push. Limited releases come through the shop, and the clientele that has been following the store since 2006 returns for them.

Major is closed Sundays, which is worth noting for visitors planning around a weekend Georgetown trip. Monday through Thursday runs 11 to 5. Friday and Saturday extend to 6. The Wisconsin Avenue location sits a few blocks north of M Street’s tourist concentration, on a stretch where the foot traffic is more residential and the browsing is more deliberate. Street parking is available on Wisconsin and the side streets; the Wisconsin Avenue corridor also has the Georgetown Circulator running through it. For anyone who grew up tracking sneaker culture in DC and remembers when there was nowhere to buy the shoes you actually wanted, Major is the store that changed that, and it is still the standard.
