Todd Snyder worked at J. Crew as creative director of men’s design from 2003 to 2009, where he was credited with establishing the menswear aesthetic that defined the brand’s cultural influence during that period. He launched his own brand in 2011, building on the J. Crew alumni network that produced a generation of American menswear designers whose work shared a common foundation in the classic American wardrobe executed with more careful attention to fabric and construction than the mass market provides.

The Georgetown store at 3307 M Street NW is on the upper end of the M Street commercial block, near Vineyard Vines and in the section that carries a concentration of premium menswear addresses. The store design reflects Snyder’s aesthetic of American workshop with particular attention to materiality: warm wood, aged metal, and the display of the clothing in a way that communicates quality without the clinical sterility of some luxury retail environments.

The Champion collaboration is among the most recognized aspects of Snyder’s brand. Starting in 2016, Snyder developed a partnership with the American athletic brand that produced Champion sweatshirts, hoodies, and T-shirts reworked in Snyder’s design language: better construction, Japanese fleece rather than the standard cotton blend, and the Reverse Weave construction that Champion pioneered but that Snyder elevated into a premium product rather than a mass-market athletic basic. The Champion sweatshirts from the Snyder collaboration have become some of the most desirable pieces in the accessible luxury menswear space.

The tailored clothing, which is the more formal end of the Snyder range, uses fabrics from Italian and British mills and is cut in the slim American proportions that the brand’s aesthetic produces. Suits, sport coats, and dress trousers in the tailored line compete in the SuitSupply-to-Ralph-Lauren price range with a design sensibility that reflects both the J. Crew heritage and the designer’s own point of view.

The store is open Monday through Saturday from 11am and Sunday from noon, with Friday and Saturday extending to 8pm. Online ordering at toddsnyder.com provides access to the full range and the collaboration releases. The Japanese denim that Todd Snyder sources for his denim program comes from the mills in Okayama and Kojima that have produced the most technically sophisticated denim fabrics in the world since the 1980s, when Japanese manufacturers began applying traditional selvedge loom technology to the American denim heritage they had studied and adopted. The selvedge denim at Todd Snyder represents the most careful end of the denim category, for the customer who wants to fade a pair of jeans over years of wear rather than buying washed denim that arrives pre-distressed. For Georgetown customers who want both the Snyder tailoring and the denim in a single Georgetown address, the M Street store at 3307 covers both. The store is open from 11am Monday through Saturday and noon Sunday.
